Pick of the day: Long Lost Family

9pm, ITV1

These moving case histories don’t always have a happy ending, or at least some have only a partially satisfactory conclusion. Sara Hathaway has been searching for her birth mother since the deaths of her beloved adoptive mother and brother. The search leads to South Africa, and while the birth mother may no longer be alive (and apparently uninterested in her long-lost children when living), Hathaway is now united with three loving step-siblings. The second story involves a birth mother searching for a son she had nearly 60 years ago as a teenager but had to give up because of her own mother’s shame. The meet-up is lovely.

The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer
