Why is there confetti on Pokemon Go today? How June 2023 event Old Friends, New Beginnings is being marked

The Old Friends, New Beginnings event went live for most of Europe at 10am local time on Tuesday 30 May

Confetti is falling from the sky in Pokémon Go today to mark the roll-out of a new event across Europe.

We say new event, this is actually the Old Friends, New Beginnings event that ran in Turkey, Spain and Poland last year, but it has now arrived for the rest of the continent.

Confetti tends to appear in the game during community-based events, or to mark days that celebrate the history of the game itself, such as launch anniversaries.

What is the Old Friends, New Beginnings event?

Old Friends, New Beginnings is a Timed Research event, which are similar to Special Research events except they are only available for a limited time. They require players to fulfill a number of tasks in order to earn rewards.

The Old Friends, New Beginnings event went live for most of Europe at 10am local time on Tuesday 30 May.

If you earn 12 hearts with your buddy Pokémon you will get a Bulbasaur encounter.

Earning 3,000 XP will get you a Charmander encounter, and powering up a Pokémon 10 times will award you a Squirtle encounter.

Completing all three tasks will net you 20 Bulbasaur candy, 20 Charmander candy and 20 Squirtle candy.

By claiming these rewards you can also get 100 each of Mega Venusaur energy, Mega Charizard energy and Mega Blastoise energy, along with a Pikachu encounter and 20 Pikachu candy.

The event runs alongside a boost giving twice the number of hearts from buddy interactions.

Old Friends, New Beginnings will be available to complete until 29 June 2023.

What is the next Pokémon Go season?

Developer Niantic has teased the next Pokémon Go season, which will be called Hidden Gems.

A Twitter post promoting the season shows a Marill, Krabby, Shellder, Clauncher and Wingull on a beach, but details for the event are yet to be announced.

The season will begin on Thursday 1 June.
